Just how careless do you have to be to do this?

Yes you have to be careful cutting up chicken when preparing it for dinner. Yes your fingers are at risk because you're using them to hold the checken down. Yet most people manage this task every day without accidentally lopping off the odd member and giving it to the dog without realizing what they're missing.
